It's true, there is subjectivity to this, and what one person finds amazing another may be indifferent to, but there are a few basic things to look for when selecting a vacation accommodation that may make your summer vacation rental experience go from good to out of this world. If you're like us when you travel you look for a really great place to stay. Everyone want's to stay at a nice vacation rental, but what does that even mean?
HowToChoose

The Choice

When choosing a spot to stay, you could go with a large name brand hotel, and if you’ve stayed at the same hotel chain before, you’ll know what to expect. Unless you’re staying in a bigger city center, however, most accommodations will be in the form of guest houses, bed and breakfasts, and local vacation rentals. When it comes to Newfoundland, some of the best places to stay are local bed and breakfast operations and oceanside guesthouses since they often offer the most value for money.

You can find many of these by searching on the internet directly or using a booking service like AirBNB, Booking.com, and VRBO.  Driving along coastal Newfoundland most of the popular spots are dotted with Bed and Breakfasts. When out exploring, if you see a Newfoundland Bed and Breakfast or local Guest House that looks interesting, take a moment to stop in and say hello. Although it’s always advisable to pre-book Newfoundland Bed and Breakfasts and Newfoundland Guesthouses in advance, you never know unless you ask, and sometimes the local Bed and Breakfast or Guesthouse operator may have a last minute cancellation that may translate into a discount or free upgrade if you decide to stay at the Guesthouse or Bed and Breakfast that night.

If you’re someone that exclusively stays at Bed and Breakfasts, we encourage you to check out some other styles of accommodations you may enjoy even more. Today a lot of Bed and Breakfasts are being replaced by guest houses.

The difference between a bed and breakfast and a guest house, besides breakfast, is guest houses often offer more of a private suite experience, some offering

  • private entrances
  • oceanside decks and even
  • hot tubs.

Suites will often have a mini-kitchen complete with convection oven, mini-bar, and fridge.

Some people prefer a guesthouse over a bed a breakfast because it lets them do their own thing without being reliant on others. When staying at a bed and breakfast, however, the experience is much like staying in a room at someone else’s house.

This can be great if you want to spend time with the owners of the bed and breakfast and hopefully make new friends, but if you want to be on your own schedule and do what you want, choosing a Newfoundland guest house over a Newfoundland bed and breakfast may be a better choice.

So does your Newfoundland bed and breakfast, guest house, or vacation rental have what it takes?

Before committing to any vacation rental in Newfoundland, check out our list of 5 things to look for when selecting a Newfoundland guesthouse, bed and breakfast, or vacation rental:

1: IS YOUR NEWFOUNDLAND VACATION RENTAL IN A GOOD LOCATION?

Think about what you want to do during your vacation and select accommodation that puts you close to the action. If you want to spend time whale watching and exploring the East Coast Trail, choosing a spot that is close to both makes sense. If you want to take in some whale watching and iceberg tours during your stay, being walking distance to the boat tour wharf beats having to call a taxi or drive to where you want to go.

Do you like restaurants and nightlife? If so, be sure to ask what’s close to your accommodation. In an ideal situation, everything will be walking distance from where you’re staying.

2: DOES YOUR SUMMER ACCOMMODATION INCLUDE AN EXPERIENCE FACTOR?

We’re not talking about having an on-site roller coaster or ferris wheel, but even if you think all you need is a place to lay your head for the night, shoot a little higher when it comes to choosing a bed and breakfast, guest house, or vacation rental during your Newfoundland adventure.

If you look around, many accommodation providers offer experiential settings like whale watching decks, organic gardens, and oceanside fire pits.

Some guesthouses even offer free canoes, kayaks, and paddleboard rentals. Having amazing things to see and do on-site at your Newfoundland vacation rental will be sure to make your stay even more awesome.

3: IS THERE A VIEW?

When visiting a province with as much coastline as Newfoundland, asking for a room with a view means you usually get one.

If you can look out over the water from your window, you’ll enjoy your stay even more. You never know when that iceberg will float by or that pod of humpback whales will make an appearance.

If you look hard and book early, you can often find boutique guest houses and bed and breakfasts right inside ecological reserves and marine protected zones, which means you’ll have the best chance of seeing wildlife in the daytime and stars at night.

4: ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND CONSERVATION?

The environment is on everyone’s mind. This is even more pronounced when staying in environmentally sensitive areas like Gros Morne National Park, Witless Bay Marine Ecological Reserve, and Newfoundland Bird Sanctuaries.

If environmental stewardship and conservation is important to you, be sure to stay in a place that makes this a priority.

Most put an emphasis on this, with some only laundering sheets and towels with natural soap, offering organic shampoos, and composting all organic waste on site.

5: IS THERE A SHUTTLE SERVICE?

If you’re staying for a few days, it’s always nice to know your transportation options. Even if you have a rental car, did you know some guest houses and bed and breakfasts on the East Coast Trail offer a free hiker shuttle service?

Often times they will also have discounted rates for shuttles to and from St. John’s international airport. If you can take advantage of a free or discounted shuttle service, you can spend more time enjoying yourself and less time figuring out the logistics of your transport.
