Thirty-five years ago, a small group of whales were trapped in ice in Springdale harbour. They became known as the Christmas whales, and saving them became a community project.
The history of the Mummers Festival – an annual parade of people dressed as mummers. It’s a wonderful spectacle, full of young, old, locals and people who haven’t the faintest what a mummer is.
Like stars? So do we. Stargazing is one of our favorite activities, especially in winter
If it’s outdoor adventure you’re craving, you can’t do much better than The Great Trail.

To put it simply, Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the premier whale watching locations in the world. With 22 species of whales, including minke, sperm, pothead, blue, orca, and the world’s largest population of humpbacks, and a variety of ways to see them, you are sure to be awe-struck, amazed, and inspired by these ocean giants.

Comprised of four small islands, this reserve is one of nature’s greatest wonders anywhere on earth. In summer it is home to millions of seabirds that come to shore to nest and raise their young on the four islands. Whales swim here, especially humpback and minkes. Best seen from a tour boat operating from nearby communities.

This classic route around the Avalon Peninsula clocks in at about 200 miles. Sampling a small piece of it, Lindsey realized she’d probably need a couple days to do it right. “My definition of a good driving tour for photos? Pulling over to the side of the road every five minutes for photos, which I totally did on the Irish Loop,” she says. “There are so many epic photo-ops: winding roads, wildlife, rivers, lakes, mountains, cliffs, islands, lighthouses, kooky souvenir shops—you name it. My advice for fellow photographers doing the loop: Bring a picnic, an extra camera battery, and if you’re traveling with someone else, make sure they’re really patient.”
Whale House Guest House offers luxury boutique private suites with outdoor hot tubs overlooking humpback whale feeding grounds. Located next to the east coast trail in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, just 30 min from downtown St. John’s.
My daughter and myself stayed there during her Female AAA hockey tournament and it had everything there available for us- breakfast, pineapple Crush and the softest towels you could dry off with. Amanda was super friendly, the suite was beautiful and the winter views of the ocean were absolutely breathtaking!!
I will definitely be staying again with or without the snow!!
The Whale House Guest house is going to be our new favorite go to spot to just relax, unwind and enjoy the quiet. Oh and to enjoy that fantastic hot tub....it was just perfect! From the ease of check-in, to the beautiful space and even more stunning views, to the homemade salsa and chips, our stay was truly amazing and we will no doubt be heading back
The Whale House Guest House was such a beautiful experience for both myself and my partner. We headed up Friday evening and drove a little further to a restaurant called The Squid Jigger. Awesome service & great fish and chips there! We had no trouble finding the Whale house as It was very clearly directed with signs on the main roads. It was a very private and intimate setting with TONS of windows overlooking the most beautiful view I have ever seen from inside a house. There was a huge private hot tub that was easy to work and provided a great view of the night sky, which of course was covered with stars. The owners added a very personable touch with a hand-written letter for us along with a bottle of homemade merlot and snacks! We really appreciated the attention to detail from the interior design of the place, to the ecologically friendly actions in place. My favourite thing of all was how the sun rose EXACTLY between the middle window overlooking the ocean. It was such a beautifully simplistic and pure experience. I am very grateful to have found this gem hidden in the middle of nature & would highly recommend to anyone looking for a getaway whether it be solo, with a loved one or a couple friends! We will definitely be back before the summer arrives!
Was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The place was absolutely amazing and the hosts were even better. Such a great place to stay I can’t wait to go back. :)
This place exceeded our expectation, I can't say enough good about it! Every detail is so thoughtful and charming. I can't wait to go back again in the summer so we can get outside and enjoy the beautiful surroundings!
